I felt a pang upon hearing Ryan’s dismissal of what had made the sock hop special for me, but I wasn’t exactly sure why.

What had I been expecting? That he would say dancing with you was the highlight of fourth grade for me?

That was ridiculous.

Because being handcuffed to a movie star was making me act ridiculous.

As much as the situation made me feel like a silly teenager fantasizing about her crush, the whole thing was beyond absurd. I was a 24-year-old woman, not the starry-eyed girl staring up at posters and pining for a boy from her past. I had lived a lot since fourth grade. Engaged, rejected, stolen from, lied to. Even bullied by my ex’s sister.

I wasn’t the small-town bumpkin Ryan probably thought I was.

But had he even said that, though? Or called me small town?

No. I was getting worked up over nothing.

“When is Madison getting here?” Ryan asked.

And I swear, being around that man sometimes felt like being on a Hollywood set, the way things always seemed to go exactly on cue.

There was a knock on the door. Three quick beats, just like Madison always did.

“She’s here now,” I said. “Come on.”

And this time, when I dragged him along with me, I yanked on our cuffs with the kind of flair and drama that a true thespian like Ryan Jones could appreciate, or at least mock.

“What was that?” he asked.

“That was me acting.”

“Acting like what?” He laughed.

Like a girl who wants this guy to like her? Or at least find her funny?

I really needed to get out of my head, because Ryan Jones wanted nothing to do with me, and I wanted nothing to do with him. Not in that way.

Or any way, really.

“Hey, Madison,” I said as I opened the door.

She raised the bag full of clothes and other assorted goodies that she had brought over and started loudly laughing when she looked down at the cuffs.

“I’m glad that you find it so funny. You can take the next shift being chained to Casanova here.”

Madison laughed harder as she entered. “I find the entire situation hilarious to be honest, while of course supporting you a hundred percent.” She dangled the bag again. “I’ve also done you a solid.”

“Thank you. I really do appreciate you coming here. Not just coming here, but for bringing me all of this.”

Madison grinned as she pulled out a stylish blouse from the bag, its side seam cleverly modified with a discreet line of velcro. “I thought tube tops weren’t really your style, so I altered one of your blouses that I borrowed but never returned.”

“Genius!” I exclaimed. “Thank you!”

“I also brought you an extra present you weren’t expecting.”

“And what is that?” I asked, not wanting to play Madison’s games, and suspicious that this next gift might be a monkey paw kind of present, like my last little surprise from the girls.

“Guess,” she said.

Ryan raised his hand. “I’ll guess.”

“Yay!” Madison exclaimed.

“Is it a set of keys for these handcuffs?”

“No,” she smiled.
